Portfolio – Restorations
The structural integrity of painted stained and leaded glass, which can be found in churches, residences and public buildings all over Canada and the United States, needs to be secured by the thorough cleaning of the glass and the complete re-leading of the panes over time.
This is based on the current knowledge that the lead used since the turn of the twentieth century has a limited lifespan of 50 to 100 years.
Soft and purified lead, produced by metal foundries from 1900 on, becomes brittle over time and windows often show signs of bulging and sagging in their lower sections, indicating that the lead grid is not any longer able to guaranty the safety and support of the painted glass.
If your windows have been installed between 1880 and 1960, it would be wise to ask a qualified stained and leaded glass Restorer to evaluate the current condition of those precious pieces of tangible heritage.
